A guide to 21 days of prayer

A DAILY PRAYER & FASTING GUIDE

“Drawing Near While We Fast”

“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” — James 4:8

This guide is designed to help you walk through each day of fasting with purpose, peace, and expectation. Fasting is not about punishing the body—it is about making room for God.

Use this rhythm daily during the fast.

? MORNING PRAYER — Offering the Day

Time: Upon waking (10–20 minutes)

1. Opening Prayer

Pray slowly, out loud if possible:

Father God,
Today I present my body as a living sacrifice.
I lay down my strength, my plans, and my control.
As my body hungers, let my spirit grow attentive to You.
I do not fast to be seen—I fast to draw near.
Speak, Lord. I am listening.
Amen.

Sit quietly for a moment.

2. Scripture Reading

Read one passage slowly. Do not rush.

Suggested Scriptures (choose one):
•Psalm 23
•Psalm 27
•Psalm 42
•Psalm 63
•Matthew 4:1–11
•John 15:1–11
•Romans 12:1–2

As you read, ask:
•What does this teach me about God?
•What is God inviting me to surrender today?

Underline or write down one phrase that stands out.

3. Listening Prayer

Sit in silence for 2–5 minutes.

If your mind wanders, gently pray:

“Speak, Lord, Your servant is listening.”

Write down any word, thought, or Scripture that comes to mind.

? MIDDAY PRAYER — Humbling the Soul

Time: Midday or during hunger (5–10 minutes)

This prayer is especially powerful when hunger is felt.

1. Simple Prayer

Place a hand over your heart or stomach and pray:

Lord,
I feel my weakness—and I offer it to You.
Let my hunger remind me that You are my sustainer.
I choose dependence over distraction.
Amen.

2. Scripture Meditation

Read one verse slowly three times:
•“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” — Matthew 4:4
•“My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9
•“Create in me a clean heart, O God.” — Psalm 51:10

Let the Word settle in your heart.

3. Intercessory Prayer

Spend a few minutes praying for:
•Our church and leadership
•Your family
•Someone who needs salvation, healing, or restoration

End with:

“Not my will, but Yours be done.”

? EVENING PRAYER — Reflection & Rest

Time: Before bed (10–15 minutes)

1. Gratitude

Thank God for:
•One moment of grace today
•One challenge that shaped you
•One way you sensed His presence

2. Daily Reflection (Examen)

Ask the Lord:
•Where did I feel close to You today?
•Where did I resist You?
•What are You inviting me into tomorrow?

Listen without judgment.

3. Closing Scripture

Read one aloud:
•Psalm 4:8
•Psalm 121
•Romans 8:1

Close with:

Father, I place this day in Your hands.
I receive Your peace and rest.
Amen.
